Year 10 X-Over Week
It’s X-Over Week for our Harrisdale Year 10 students.
Our X-Over is a Service Learning Program which sees students engaged in a variety of extra-curricular activities throughout the State, from Ningaloo Reef down to Albany.
Today the students doing the Wildlife Rescue Program spent the morning in our woodworking room making Microbat nesting boxes for the City of Armadale.
After a talk from the City’s Senior Environmental Officer Corinne Omacini and Shane Hunter from Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group, one of the boxes was installed in a tree on our campus.
In addition to contributing to biodiversity, the students learned that microbats eat a huge amount of insects every night, (up to 700 per hour!) so it’s beneficial for mosquito control to create more habitats for these tiny critters.
Students were encouraged to install a box at home and the remaining boxes will be donated to the @cityofarmadalewa and the Armadale Gosnells Landcare Group to be put up in nature reserves.
Tomorrow is Day 3 of the program and the students are volunteering at the Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Rescue Centre to help out and learn more about conservation.
