Children’s Laureate Visit Ignites Imagination

To kick off Book Week, our Year 5 students were visited by author, illustrator, and Australian Children’s Laureate (2022-2023) Gabrielle Wang last Monday.

Gabrielle shared generously about her past, growing up in Melbourne as the only Chinese girl in her neighbourhood, and her process as a creator of children’s books.

With the theme of her laureateship ‘Imagine a Story’, Gabrielle encouraged us to truly imagine by drawing on all five senses when writing or drawing.

“Imagination is like a muscle,” Gabrielle said. “You have to use it, or you’ll lose it!”

Students hung on her every word as Gabrielle told spooky stories from her childhood and enjoyed learning to draw a special Chinese dragon with her. Gabrielle said our Year 5 students were some of the most insightful and engaged students she’d ever visited!
