Carey Graduate’s Cycling Success
Congratulations to 2020 Carey Graduate Matthew Connan, for coming third place in the U19 AusCycling National Time Trial Championships last week!
Matthew said the National Time Trial Championships had been his target race since the 2020 event when he placed 5th in his first year racing as an U19.
“I trained hard for Nationals all through Year 12, working through exams, injuries and illness – regularly over 15 hours of cycling per week. My lead into Nationals was a little shaky with a 6 week period of injury, eventually ending with a trip to the radiologist for an MRI. Setting me behind my scheduled preparation, I had a lot of work to do in a short period of time.
After 8 weeks of really high intensity training, I had built my fitness to a level I was happy with. During the week of the event, I felt strong and I was ready to attack the National Time Trial with everything I had. I was privileged enough to have finished the event in 3rd place, achieving my first (and hopefully not last!) national podium.
I’ve been incredibly blessed to have the support of so many people including my family, friends, school and sponsors, particularly through the last 12 months.
Now I look forward to racing nationally throughout 2021 and Nationals in 2022 as I step up into the U23 category. Of course, I’ll have to wait to leave quarantine for that!”
Fantastic achievement Matthew, we look forward to following your journey ahead!
