Teamwork Triumphs for Carey Harrisdale Secondary Athletes
On Tuesday 22 October, Carey Baptist College Harrisdale competed in the Year 7 Super Series Competition, which brings together ACC schools from across Perth to compete in different regional groups and sports.
We entered four teams in Netball, Basketball and Soccer.
Netball
Our Year 7 Netball team had an exciting run, winning three out of five games.
The girls played their hearts out, were very coachable, and showed incredible teamwork both on and off the court throughout the competition.
They were guided by the amazing Year 10 coaches, Emma Hair and Ava Sharman, whose organisation, enthusiasm and support made all the difference. The Year 7s learned so much from them during the lead-up to the competition, and the coaches were everything a team could hope for.
A big thank you to the parents who came out to support us – your presence really made the day special.
One unforgettable highlight was Sienna’s ecstatic celebration after each goal she shot, no matter the pressure. Her energy and excitement boosted team morale and kept everyone smiling all day long.
Overall, it was a fantastic day of Netball filled with learning, laughter, and great memories!
Basketball
Our Year 7 Boys and Girls Basketball teams had an exciting and action-packed day. The Girls kicked off the event with a fantastic win in their first game, showing great teamwork and energy. In the second game, they only narrowly missed out on victory. While their last two games ended in losses, neither team’s determination and effort wavered.
With a mix of basketball experience among the players, it was heartwarming to see the more experienced Year 7s step up to coach and guide their teammates. Under the leadership of their team captains, Bridgette Lantzke and Nicholas Luong, everyone got a chance to shine on the court.
A huge shoutout to our incredible Year 10 coaches, Charlotte Clark, Ella Broadly, Lore Oyetunji and Ben Surjawidjaja, who did an amazing job preparing the team. The Year 7s learned so much from their training and guidance in the lead-up to the competition.
We were also grateful for the support of the Year 7 Year Manager, Ms Roberts, and the many parents who came to cheer on the team. Their encouragement made the day even more special.
One of the day’s highlights was a spontaneous Carey Boys vs. Girls game during our byes. Even the teachers joined in! There were lots of smiles, and it was a great way for everyone to come together and have some fun.
Soccer
14 Year 7s attended the Boys Soccer carnival held at Curtin University.
Our Year 10 Soccer Specialist coaches, Simba Sigauke and Joshua Munch, worked hard with the Year 7 team in the weeks before the carnival and on the day, showing great maturity and professionalism.
The competition started off well, with Carey’s two out of three wins placing us in second place after the group games. Carey held possession and controlled the pace of the games with amazing efforts from many of the students, using great team defence and lightning-fast runs to break through the opposition’s defence.
Carey then competed against the other teams that had finished second and ended with 3 wins and 2 losses against some very high-quality teams.
Levi Morgan stepped up as captain on the day and exceeded in his leadership and communication with the team. Congratulations to Zachary Godecke, who was voted MVP for his amazing defensive efforts on the day.
The sportsmanship and effort shown by all Carey students were fantastic. Every student who represented the College should be proud of what they achieved. I am excited to see this team grow and improve over the next few years at Carey.

Year 10 Basketball Competition
On 29 October, our Year 10 Basketball Development Classes participated in the Year 10 Basketball Carnival at Willetton Basketball Stadium, hosted by All Saints College.
This event offered our teams a fantastic competitive opportunity to face other Specialist Basketball schools south of the river.
Our Boys’ and Girls’ teams represented the College with outstanding resilience and determination, showing exemplary Carey values throughout each game.
The Boys’ team clinched a well-deserved victory against CBC Fremantle. Meanwhile, the Girls’ team triumphed over All Saints and tied against Emmanuel Catholic College, showcasing skill and determination on the court.
Despite the challenging competition, both teams displayed incredible team spirit and sportsmanship. We’re proud of how our students competed, and this experience further highlights the dedication and potential within our Basketball Development classes.
