Junior Young Physicists’ Tournament 2024

Junior Young Physicists’ Tournament 2024

10 of our Carey GATE STEM students competed in the Junior Young Physicists’ Tournament in Brisbane over the Term 3 school break with impressive results.

Hosted by Brisbane Girls Grammar School from 29 September to 1 October, the annual JYPT offers students the opportunity to explore intriguing physics phenomena through research and experimentation. The tournament mimics real-world scientific inquiry, where students present their findings to peers who critically evaluate the science, methodologies, and conclusions.

In this unique competition, students tackled open-ended problems given out months earlier and were required to explain the underlying concepts, conduct their own experiments, and analyse their findings. Their weeks of research culminated in thrilling real-time debates with their opponents, who had studied the same problems.

Carey’s two teams secured outstanding results this year, placing first and fourth among the eight teams competing from Australia and New Zealand.

Carey Team Green, consisting of Sanuthi (Captain), Jaden, Jugraj, Isha and Simra, emerged as the tournament champions, besting Wellington Senior High in a gripping grand final.

Meanwhile, Carey Team White, consisting of Aiswarya (Captain), Abraham, Carol, Eva and Jessie, also delivered a strong performance, narrowly missed out on the bronze medal.

Well done, students!

Special thanks to Mrs Crouch and Mrs Koh for praying for the students throughout the competition and reminding them of our Carey values when the going got tough. As a result, the tournament host, Carmen, noticed our students’ exemplary behaviour and professionalism, commenting, “Please pass on my congratulations to your teams. They conducted themselves so well throughout.”

A big thank you to our Science and Technologies departments for their invaluable assistance and support, and to Mr Windle for the many large 3D prints. Most of all, we praise God for His hand of protection and favour upon us.
