Introducing Aquaponics

Introducing Aquaponics

Our Year 8 Food and Fibre class is excited to announce the integration of a new aquaponics system into our curriculum. Guided by Horticulture Technician Mr Matt Cunningham, students are engaging with this sustainable method of agriculture, which combines aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil).

Recently, students participated in setting up the system by planting seedlings and introducing fish to their new habitat. The hands-on experience allows them to understand the symbiotic relationship between fish and plants, where fish waste provides essential nutrients for plant growth, and plants help filter and clean the water for the fish.

This practical learning experience enriches students’ knowledge of sustainable farming practices and promotes an understanding of ecological balance. The aquaponics system is a valuable addition to our school, enhancing our commitment to sustainability and providing our students with unique, real-world learning opportunities.

Shade Structures for Summer

In a recent double session at the Horticulture Patch, our Year 10 students collaborated to construct shade structures to prepare for the upcoming summer.

This hands-on project is part of our Year 10 Permaculture class, which is responsible for managing and maintaining a small market garden. The urgency to build these shade structures stems from the scorching heat experienced last summer. The students recognise the need for proper shading to protect the crops and ensure their growth during the hottest months. By taking advantage of the time between harvests, they have proactively addressed this challenge, ensuring the garden remains productive and resilient.

Students selected and prepared tools and materials, applied soil treatments and implemented the safety measures outlined in their permaculture training. This activity not only prepared the garden for harsh future conditions but saw the students, once again, engaging in practical experience that reinforces the principles and practices of permaculture in a real-world context.

We look forward to seeing the benefits of their hard work as we move into the summer season.
