Carey Robotics Team Represents at the 2025 VEX World Championships

In early April, a team from Carey Baptist College Harrisdale travelled to Dallas, Texas to represent Australia at the 2025 VEX Robotics World Championships – the largest global robotics competition of its kind.

The team competed over three days of intense matches, inspections, interviews and finals. They held their own against the world’s best, winning the majority of their qualification matches and spending time ranked in the Top 16 in their division.

By the end of their qualifying rounds, the team had secured a spot in their division’s Elimination Finals, placing 26th out of 80 teams and joining forces with a team from Pennsylvania, USA. Though they were eliminated in the Round of 16, it was at the hands of the eventual division champions – a result that placed Carey in the top 5% of teams worldwide.

In addition to their outstanding performance on the field, the team was awarded the Innovation Award for their division. This prestigious award recognises a compelling and well-documented design process, a high-quality Engineering Notebook, and strong team communication during judging interviews. Winning this award placed them in the top 14 teams globally for judged categories.

The students were exemplary in every way, not only achieving remarkable technical outcomes but also demonstrating Carey’s values of courage, integrity and kindness throughout the competition. Their growth in skill and character is a powerful example of what happens when learning is connected to purpose, collaboration and global vision.

A special moment of the trip was the recognition of Mr Daniel Braithwaite, Carey’s Head of Science, who received the Inspiration All-Star Award at the VEX STEM Hall of Fame. This international award celebrates educators who have had a significant impact in STEM education through innovation, leadership and mentorship.

As shared during the award ceremony, Daniel “encourages students to think about more than just the robot they are building, but also the person they are becoming.” His leadership is a living example of Christian education in action, where academic excellence and character formation go hand in hand.

We extend our thanks to the staff who supported the trip, to our sponsors Edith Cowan University (ECU), Total Marine Technology, Murdoch University, Curtin University and the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct, and to local leaders Minister Stephen Dawson MLC and Mr Yaz Mubarakai MLA for their generous support of the team.

Congratulations to our students and staff on this incredible experience. We are proud of your efforts, inspired by your commitment, and grateful for the way you represented Carey on the world stage.
