Tassie Hike 2024
During the last week of Term 3 and the first week of the holidays, an adventurous group of Year 11s spent ten days hiking in Tasmania.
Part One of the Tassie Hike forced students to brave the cold winds (which sometimes felt like they were blowing straight from Antarctica) and epic coastal cliffs at the very bottom of Australia, completing a multi-day hike on the Three Capes Walk. Not for the fainthearted, the group was delivered by boat to a sheltered beach, wading through freezing water to find the start of the trail in an area that can only be accessed by foot or helicopter.
We slept each night in amazing huts that provided kitchen facilities to cook our own meals, a warm fire, and a Ranger who provided daily updates and recommendations. (One hut even boasted an outdoor bucket shower, which some of our students enjoyed during a light hailstorm!)
The students completed the trail at Fortesque Bay with a freezing dip in the ocean.
Part Two of the Tassie Hike took the Year 11s across Tasmania to Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Staying at the historical Waldheim Cottages, we had an abundance of hiking trails on our doorstep. For some students, it was their very first experience of snow, so, of course, snowman-making and snowball fights ensued!
Tasmania really does experience four seasons in one day! From rain and blasts of wind to sunshine and soft snowfall on the day of our departure, students experienced it all.
Thank you to Mr Boldy for all of his planning, preparation, and running of this trip, and to Miss Terblanche and Mr Barnard, who also gave up their time (including their school holidays) to make this unforgettable adventure possible.
